Surface premiered on NBC in the US on September 19th 2005. Only one season, of 15 episodes was made before the series was cancelled the following year in May 15th. Originally 22 episodes were planned, but this was changed to 18 and later 15 due to the 2006 Winter Olympics. The series went on hiatus while awaiting word on its renewal, only to be cancelled dispite having good ratings, resulting in a cliffhanger ending.

Oceanographer Dr Laura Daughtery is attacked by an unknown creature that appears out of a field of craters on the ocean floor, during a routine submersible diving operation in the Pacific Ocean. On a night-time outing with his friends, Miles Barnett comes face to face with one of the creatures after falling off his wakeboard. On a fishing trip with his brother, Richard Connelly witnesses his brother being dragged to the depts of the ocean by one of the creatures during a freak diving accident.

Strange things are happening in the worlds oceans, stars fall from the sky, a horrendous howl tears appart a lighthouse, an unknown carcass washes up on a beach in South Carolina.

While Laura and Rich try and find out the truth about these creatures, the government does everything it can to stop them, including it seems, killing one of their own agents who eventually decided to bring her into the loop.

Meanwhile, Miles raises one of the creatures, named Nimrod (Nim for short) in secret, even running away from home in order to protect him. When out looking for Nim, miles is attacked by others of Nim's kind, leaving him in hospital, meanwhile Nim returns. With Nim now being kept at the aquariam where Miles is working, things were looking up until Miles gets into an altercation with a bully, his sisters boyfriend, Miles zaps the boy, with a similar discharge to Nims, and things only get worse.

With a tsunami, triggered by the larger creatures activities on the ocean floor, heads for Mile's town, the people prepare to evacuate. When Miles goes back for Catlin who went looking for Miles at his house, the two drive away in his fathers Mercedes. Meeting Laura and Rich en route, they try to head to saftey, but with petrol siphoned from the Mercedes to use in the other family car, they are stuck and forced to take refuge in a church tower. They survive the tsunami, and witness a devistated town, a new world.

Unfortunatly, there has been no continuation of the plotline with the series being cancelled, though a website was setup in an attempt to save the series, savesurface.com.
